Arrest made in fatal Underground Atlanta shooting
A Stone Mountain man is in jail after being accused of a fatal shooting Monday afternoon at Underground Atlanta, police said.
Brandon Barnes, 25, was arrested late Monday night and charged with murder after Atlanta Police investigators questioned him about his part in the fatal shooting police say stemmed from a fight.
Just before 4 p.m. on Monday, police were called to the scene at 65 Alabama St. in downtown Atlanta where gunfire was reported.
Officers found a man believed to be in his early 20s shot several times.
The man, who has not been identified pending notification of his next of kin, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
Monday evening, investigators identified Barnes and took him into custody for questioning, police spokesman Officer John Chafee said.
“Investigators had been speaking with a male to determine whether he was involved in this homicide,” Chafee said. “Through further investigation, Atlanta Police homicide investigators were able to ascertain probable cause to charge him with murder.”
The incident was the second fatal shooting Monday in and around Atlanta’s downtown area within a four-hour time frame, although it unclear whether the two are connected.
The first shooting, in the parking lot of a convenience store and Subway restaurant at the corner of Northside Drive and Markham Street just south of the Georgia Dome, happened just after noon.
Police have yet to identify a suspect or determine a motive, and continue to investigate.
Authorities also haven’t named the victim of the earlier incident, pending notification of next of kin.
Regarding the Underground shooting, Barnes has had a number of prior arrests, according to jail records.
Most recently, he was arrested in DeKalb County on an October 2010 charge of theft by receiving stolen property, jail records show.
In July 2008, Barnes was arrested on a burglary charge in East Point, according to Fulton County jail records.
He was arrested by MARTA police in 2006 for allegations of stealing financial transaction cards, and arrested in 2006 and 2005 by DeKalb County Schools police on charges of weapons possession on school property, jail records show.
The investigation continues.
