Dunlap teacher charged with two felonies for bathroom camera
A Dunlap High School teacher’s attempt to secretly record colleagues in a school bathroom this week also captured him positioning the cell phone underneath the sink.
Guy L. Sandy, 52, of 401 N. French Dr. was charged Wednesday with two felony counts of unauthorized videotaping for allegedly placing a cell phone in a faculty bathroom Tuesday.
The first images found on the phone after it was discovered by one of the victims were of Sandy himself using duct tape to secure the device beneath a sink, according to the probable cause statement read aloud in court Wednesday at a bond hearing.
When asked by a judge whether he intended to hire a private attorney and whether he could pay $2,500 bail to be released from custody, Sandy revealed that his employment had been terminated.
“I don’t have a job now, and the only asset I would have now would be the equity in our house,” said Sandy, who appeared in court wearing a black-and-white striped jail jumpsuit via closed circuit television from the Peoria County Jail.
A woman who identified herself as Sandy’s wife stood and told Judge Richard McCoy that the family could pay $2,500 bail, effectively ending the brief court appearance. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m. April 18, though a grand jury could hear the case before that date.
Four adults and one minor – a 15-year-old special needs student who was allowed to use the faculty restroom – were found to have been recorded by an application on the cell phone that took still photos once every three seconds, according to court documents.
The phone was discovered by one of the women whose image was captured on the device. It was found to have members of Sandy’s family listed as contacts when it was examined by investigators with the Peoria County Sheriff’s Department.
Police also recovered a fingerprint that matched Sandy from the duct tape used to secure the phone beneath the sink, court records indicate.
Sandy is the second Dunlap High School faculty member in less than a year to be arrested for secretly recording people on school grounds. Former teacher Gordon Mills was arrested last fall for recording video of students’ undergarments with an iPad on the floor by his desk and is currently serving a six-month sentence in the Peoria County Jail after pleading guilty in January.
The Class 3 and Class 4 felony charges leveled against Sandy carry potential terms of two to five years and one to three years in prison, respectively, though he could face up to 10 years if he is eligible for an extended term.
