Two juveniles booked for robbery and murder
Two juveniles fatally shot a 43-year-old man in New Orleans on June 16, just to rob him of his cell phone, police allege. Dashawn Lowery, 14, and his cousin, Kendrick Williams, 16, have each been booked with one count of murder and one count of armed robbery, court records show.
Lowery’s case remains in the state’s juvenile justice system for now. Williams’ case, meanwhile, has been transferred to Orleans Parish Criminal District Court.
Police found Joseph Edwards lying face-up at the corner of St. Ann and North Dorgenois streets. He had been shot in the left side of his face, his right leg and his left wrist, and he later died from his wounds at a hospital.
In an affidavit, New Orleans Police Department Detective Charles Hoffacker wrote that he spoke with a witness who saw two youths commit the deadly shooting. One of them was about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and matched the description of Williams, Hoffacker said. The other was 5 feet, 7 inches tall and was similar to Lowery.
Hoffacker said he and members of NOPD’s 1st District Task Force stopped Lowery near the intersection of Orleans Avenue and North Rocheblave Street on June 21. Lowery agreed to accompany Hoffacker to NOPD’s Homicide Office to talk about Edwards’ murder, the detective wrote.
In the presence of his mother, Lowery allegedly told Hoffacker that he and Williams planned to steal Edwards’ phone. But then Williams fired a gun at the victim, Lowery said, according to Hoffacker’s affidavit.
Lowery was read his Miranda rights, but he opted to give a confession that was recorded on audio and video, Hoffacker reported.
Hoffacker then obtained a warrant to arrest Williams, who turns 17 on Sunday. Authorities apprehended Williams while he was riding his bicycle in the 2000 block of Almonaster Street on Monday, and they jailed him as an adult defendant on Thursday morning after a proceeding in juvenile court.
Williams’ initial bail was set at $500,000.
