Woman dies in Sylmar after daughter’s ex-boyfriend beats her with metal pipe
Juan Carlos Cardena of Sylmar was arrested in Sylmar Tuesday of suspicion of beating his ex-girlfriend and her mother with a metal pipe, killing the mother and seriously injuring the younger woman.
Juan Carlos Cardenas, 25, was being held today on $1 million bail. Police said the women were trying to take him to a hospital to get him help for his drug use when he attacked them.
The woman, 61-year-old Rosa Figueroa, was beaten to death and her daughter, whose name was withheld, was seriously injured Tuesday by the younger woman’s ex-boyfriend, who was armed with a pipe, police say. They had been targeted by the suspect, 25-year-old Juan Carlos Cardenas, for some time. Figueroa had a restraining order against him.
A witness called 911 shortly after 4 p.m. when he saw a SUV driving erratically. The SUV then pulled into a driveway on Borden Street, Los Angeles police Lt. Paul Vernon said. Two women got out and started running.
Police said Cardenas drove toward the older woman, 61-year-old Rosa Figueroa, as if to run her over, then got out of the SUV and started beating her with a pipe.
Figueroa’s daughter jumped over a fence, and Cardenas followed and beat her, too, Vernon said.
Figueroa died at the scene. Her daughter, 24, suffered facial fractures. The woman, whose name police would not release, has had her jaw wired shut at a hospital, Vernon said today. She and Cardenas have a 2-month-old son together.
Officers soon found an out-of-breath Cardenas walking not far away and arrested him.
Vernon said the younger woman’s life was saved by the witness, who called 911 repeatedly and pointed officers to Cardenas.
Vernon, detective commander for the LAPD’s Mission Division, said the pipe used in the attack was 3 to 4 feet long and about 2 inches in diameter. Police initially said Figueroa was run over with the car, but now don’t believe she was, Vernon said Wednesday.
Police said Cardenas is a methamphetamine user who served time in jail recently for choking his mother and had been ordered to stay away from Figueroa after kicking in her apartment door.
LAPD records show Cardenas had been arrested at least four times since 2009 on charges including possession of methamphetamine and cohabitant abuse.
In January, he was arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment and released after 10 days in jail.
Vernon said detectives didn’t know the exact reason for the attack, but that meth users often exhibit such “rages.”
Police asked anyone with information to call Detective Gretchen Schultz at 818-838-9951.
